Modena, Italy. Summer, 1984.

When three fourteen-year-old friends sneak into the Botanical Gardens one night to investigate a mysterious light, they expect to find nothing more exciting than a night watchman. Instead, they witness two strangers hiding something among the plants—and a towering figure with the head of a jackal watching over them.

Anubis. The ancient Egyptian god of the dead.

By the time the boys escape, they have something the strangers desperately want back: a small Egyptian statuette covered in hieroglyphs. What begins as an irresistible mystery soon leads them from libraries and museums to abandoned houses, secret meetings and increasingly dangerous encounters. And the closer they get to the truth, the clearer one thing becomes: someone knows who they are.

Armed mostly with bicycles, bad ideas and the absolute certainty that they can handle whatever comes next, the three friends are determined to uncover The Mystery of the Egyptian Statuette.
